Filling Up Space - Rendering abstract objects within a certain context

Image
Filling Up Space In our final assignment we were tasked with create a abstract artwork to be displayed on the small corner of land near the Jubilee building. Using three shapes-- one dominant, one subdominant, and one subordinate.      Along with that we were meant to write about the top five things that we had learned over the course of this class. For me I really loved just being able to use Rhino. Learning different functions and how they can aid when trying to execute a certain idea-- Taking the forms I created and then being able to light and render them in a way that made them look great. I also liked the experience of gained from our mixing/ mashup assignments-- being able to take certain design elements you like from one concept and being about to add them to another concept to create an object that is pleasing to the eye. I also appreciate the experience we had being able to go through the creative process several times--going from simply an idea to and ac...

Last Minute Changes - final paper prototype

Image
Last Minute Changes So I had originally wanted to build this paper helm based on the Elite Knight armor from Dark Souls which is a video game franchise I like. As the weeks went by I was having trouble trying to create the paper craft patterns specifically the back of the head to neck part. I just wasn't sure how to get the specific shape correct. I was also having a hard time figuring out how I was going to get all the parts to connect together-- Which sucked as I really wanted to be able to create this helm to wear around. Overall it was an interesting experience-- I definitely want to revisit making something like this in the future.   first few outlines (outlines of the bottom half and top)  more iterations of the bottom half of the mask (covering the mouth) trying to figure out how to create the back of the head shape prototype patterns (pieces for the skull cap, the side of head, the chin, and the bottom half of the face) front half of the helm skull cap (try...

Mashing up the funky vases - More Revolving and lofting

Image
FUNKY VASE MASH UP For this assignment we were to create 3 new vessels using some of the 10 previous concepts from last weeks post. My process for doing so was taking the previous curves/lines I created and mixed the ones I thought would make the most interesting forms. I also tried to exaggerate the hollow vessel's shapes more in these iterations. I chose to use the star outline for two of my vessels because I thought it created interesting curves. For the first vessel in these pictures I tried to mashup the two revolved vessels I created-- trying to keep in mind the steep curves of one while also trying to include the cylindrical opening of the other.

Funky vases - Hollow form vessel techniques

Image
FUNKY VASES In this assignment we were to create 10 hollow vessel concepts using functions like extrudeCrv, loft and revolve. It was interesting experimenting to see what worked and what didn't work. I was a big fan of organic shapes so I used the control point curve tool quite a bit-- I thought that it made some really interesting forms. My favourite vessels were the star one and the really bendy one in the second group of five.  Vessels 1-5 Vessels 5-10

Creating shit until it looks about right - The cycle of creation and then failure

Image
The Cycle of Creation and then Failure  I had decided to proceed with the Elite Knight Helm concept as the one I was going to attempt to recreate from paper. With this decision began the lengthy process of trying to figure out how I was even going to go about create the object -- My prof's advice was to as soon as possible try to create something out of paper. I drew up some sketches -- just to try to break down the helm into simpler objects/ patterns. The lower mouth guard and the decorative piece on the top of the helm seemed easy enough to visualize -- but it was really back piece covering most of the head that I was having trouble conceptualizing. I had also taken some measurements of my head and neck that I thought I might need which I noted in my sketches.  Heeding my prof's advice, I quickly started drawing some of the patterns out on newsprint. Occasionally holding the pieces up against my face to see how they might look. Fig 1 and Fig 2 are supposed to be both the top...

Skinning objects - Unrolling, Extruding, and Lowering polygons

Image
SKINNING OBJECTS    For this post we were supposed to take ten objects in Rhino and use commands like extrude, unrollsrf etc. and eventually come up with the patterns for all ten objects. I didn't have much trouble with this assignment. Although I had some trouble initially because whenever I had unrolled an object the unrolled parts would be separate and not connected like in the examples. By playing around a bit in Rhino I realized that my issue was that explode was toggled on whenever I tried to unroll an object.  After turning that off everything else was a breeze.

Papercraft Assignment- Concepts
